What is long hair in males?

The first thing that one needs to consider when trying to grow his hair long or if one already has plenty of hair length is to ask oneself, how long is long hair? The answer is very simple: long hair is any hair length over six inches.

Why is long hair considered long if it is over six inches long?

Once hair is six inches long, it requires a more intensive approach to hair care. Likewise, at this length, the hair reaches below ear length, which many hair professionals (including ours at our barbershop) agree that such is the minimum length to have the hair lying flat and dangling as well as being able to have the hair tied into a bun or ponytail. However, not all hair types will have the hair lying flat at six inches, but, with all hair types, the approach to hair care becomes slightly more complex.

How fast does hair grow in men?

Ok, so you’re planning to grow your hair long and reach the length mark of six inches of hair length, how fast will you get there? Well, the typical hair growth rate for an adult male is half an inch per month. Thus, simply subtract your current hair length from six inches, time it by two, and you will get the amount of months that you have left to become a long haired dude!

For example, if your hair is currently two inches long, you simply subtract six minutes two, which is four, and then multiply it by two, which is eight. Thus, if you have hair that is two inches long, it will take you eight months to grow your hair long.

How do I grow hair long as a dude?

This is a question that we get a lot in our barbershop. The answer is very simple at its very core: you need to be patient. Forget about miracle potions or about brushing your hair hundreds of times per day; the key to growing your hair long and fast is to be patient and to give your body and scalp plenty of hair-essential nutrients.

How do I look after long hair as a guy?

The hair care approach to long hair for men revolves around the use of conditioners and your own sebum. Long hair needs to be conditioned frequently so as to avoid tangles and knots, which is very common with curly hair especially.

Sebum is a liquid that is secreted by your hair follicles in your scalp. This liquid (i.e. sebum) is meant to coat your hair so as to protect it and give it a natural gloss and shine, although sebum by itself has difficulties traveling across the hair on its own, especially with the wavy and curly hair types. Hence the key to having the best long hair possible is to balance the use of hair conditioners and your own sebum!

How do I style long hair?

Hairstyling for long manes isn’t so much of an issue when compared to its hair care. There are two main hairstyles for long haired males: down or up.

A “down” style is when your hair is left loose and dangling. A down-style can be a middle part or a side part.

An “up” style is when your hair is tied, either all of it or the majority of it. An up-style can be a man bun, top knot or ponytail. An up-style is also known as an up’do style.

There are many cool hairstyles for long hair so go through our detailed long men’s hairstyles guide to discover all the great long hair styles for men that can be incorporated into your range of daily or future styles for your mane.

What are the problems associated with long hair for men?

Long hair had a tendency to tangle. This is due to hair dryness, friction of your head against objects (such as your pillow), leftover residue from hair products or sebum and/or not cleaning your hair properly. Hair tangles occur in all hair types, although they’re most common with long curly hair.

Other issues include dry hair, frizzy hair and your long locks getting stuck in your clothes (e.g. in your shirt’s collar) and other objects (watch out for elevator doors and theme parks!).

What is society’s view on long haired men?

Long haired guys have always been a sub-group within the different social groups for males. Long hair in men is rare, and it is estimated that about 5% of the male population worldwide had long hair.

Long hair is still seen with a mild negative view in most countries, especially in the United States and Europe. This is due to the association of long hair in men with rock & roll, heavy metal, hippies, rednecks and outcasts. However, you will find that there are plenty of long haired men who do not fit such a stereotype, and you will find plenty of long haired male doctors, long haired male athletes, long haired male actors and even long haired male politicians!

All in all and in general, the view on long haired men has been slowly improving as it has become more mainstream, especially over the last three years with the man bun hairstyle trend. However, outside of hairstyle trends such as the man bun, long hair in males has yet to further improve its “image” in society.
