5 Skullet Hairstyle Ideas for Long Hair Dudes

See why the Skullet is a viable long hairstyle for trendy men

With long hair, everyone is free to express himself in any way that he may want. Having said this, there are some funny long hairstyles for men that are sure headturners! I mean, why wear a trendy long hairstyle for men that everyone else is wearing when you could customize your own long mane to your free spirit and soul in the most creative manner?

Don’t know what I’m talking about? Well, I’m talking of the skullet, also known as the mullet with a buzzcut.

What is a skullet hairstyle?

A skullet hairstyle is a portmanteau that gets its name from the joining of two words: skull and mullet. Thus, the skullet hairstyle is a type of hairstyle where the hair is kept very short, which reveals the shape of the skull, while the only hair that is not kept short and is instead kept long is the hair on the lower back of the head (i.e. a mullet). The hair length of the skullet is in the long hair category, ranging from six inches all the way to forty inches (yes, I’ve seen a skullet that long once in my life when I was visiting some friends in Tennessee).

Ergo, what we have with the hair making up a skullet is a hairstyle foundation that can be “extremely creative” (to put it in a not-too-harsh type of wording). Other hairstyle accessories for the skullet can include facial hair in the form of the skullet bard or the skullet mustache, which look equally horrendous.

Essentially, this is what the perfect skullet hairstyle looks like for dude with a mustache typical of a 12-year-old boy:

The skullet hairstyle is most popular in the south of the United States (i.e. The Deep South), particularly in what are known as “redneck” states such as Alabama, Texas, Mississippi or Kentucky (among other states within the United States of America). Incidentally, the skullet is termed a redneck hairstyle, and it is, as a matter of fact, a badge of honor for (redneck) men in these states to wear an epic skullet hairstyle.

I am not myself criticizing their choice of hairstyle or the use of the “redneck” word; I am just telling things as they are and from the thousands of stories that I’ve heard and talked about as a barber in a state that could also be considered a redneck state (at least a good part of it!).

Without further ado, I give you 5 Skullet hairstyle ideas for long haired guys.

The Rat Tail Skullet

One thing is having a skullet, another is having a skullet with the rat-tail hairstyle. The rat tail style is basically having a couple of thin locks hanging of your nape while the rest of the hair is buzzed. In other words, it’s a minimalist skullet with thin locks of hair hanging off from the little hair you have making up the skullet.

The elegant rat tail skullet

If you don’t want to make it look like you’ve got a dead rat hanging off your head, you might as well go ahead and make the rat-tail locks thicker and only braid them into two locks. It’s all about elegance and class, my fellow long haired brethren.

The curtained skullet

The good thing about the curtained skullet is that it provides maximum protection against sunburn around the nape area, which in retrospect isn’t the best hairstyle if you want to be called a “redneck”. Other than that, the curtained skullet can also protect the posterior part of your neck from being hit and slashed by a broken bottle or broken glass thrown at you during a bar fight by a fellow redneck (with said fellow redneck quite possibly being your brother who got royally pissed off at you for flirting with his girlfriend — his girlfriend being your and his sister).

If you’re the kind of guy who deems safety as a priority above all else, the curtained skullet is your best choice, as those damn rat tails offer no neck protection.

The ponytail skullet

I’d go as far as to say that the ponytail skullet can look cute… on a woman, not on a dude. Come on, guys, it gets even worse if the skullet ponytail that you’re wearing takes inspiration from the glorious-albeit-disgraceful ponytail of Steven Seagal.

Add the letters “A” and “S” razor shaved on the side of your head, probably standing for some kind of deep-South acronym for a yet-to-be-discovered STD (by scientists, not rednecks), and you’ve got yourself a picture-perfect skullet hairstyle.

The pigtail skullet

You see, in the world of those mere mortals, pigtails are worn on each side of the head, since there’s plenty of hair and hair length around the skull. However, in the redneck… I mean, in the skullet world, any complementing of the skullet is done on the sides of the skullet. Pretty much because there’s no hair elsewhere on the head as per the skullet official guidelines audited and certified by Deloitte on that year when the South Park episode with those rednecks shouting “Deetuc ‘er Yabsss” was aired (can’t remember the name of that episode, anyone?).

Conclusion: the Skullet rocks!

That’s right, the skullet hairstyle rocks. If you didn’t come to that conclusion already, then you’re not one of them (actually, you may want to thank your lucky stars that you aren’t one of them).

Let us know what you think of the skullet in the comments below. Should it be embraced by mainstream society as it partially happened with the topknot hairstyle or should it be made illegal?

  1. I’m sure it’s just me (I’m female, so maybe that’s the difference?), but the pics for elegant rat tail and pig tail look like the same style. What nuance am I missing? Is it because the latter is shorter? The braids are thicker? Thank you!

  2. This was an awesome guide on the skullet hairstyle! I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a skullet now that I have long hair. I actually followed your advice and the advice of Rogelio Samson to grow my hair long and now I’m looking for hairstyle ideas.

I’m a university student so the way my hair looks won’t be a problem. I take it that it would be a problem if I worked an office job. I guess it’s the novelty of the skullet hairstyle that I’m attracted to, but I’m not sure yet whether to go ahead and cut some of my long hair to get a refined skullet or skip that idea and get some of the other hairstyles on your other long hair guides.

Any thoughts of yours for this dude thinking about a hipster skullet?

      Nick,

My advice is to not do it. Why ruin a long mane that has taken you a long time to grow? The stereotypical Skullet hairstyle is going to require an odd medium-length haircut, which means that your long mane is going to look oddly shaped whenever you don’t fancy sporting a Skullet. There are plenty of long hairstyles for men in my long-hairstyles guide to choose from; you’ve got plenty of hairstyles to choose from and you don’t require a rocket-science degree to achieve any of the hairstyles in my guide. Not just that, but you will also be avoiding the awkwardly-shaped haircut that is required for a true redneck Skullet.

Stay long-haired, my friend, and avoid the Skullet hairstyle for now!

  3. Scarfacematt

I accidentally just gave myself a skullet while giving myself a buzz cut. The hair clipper died. It’s actually not that bad. I got a bit of hair on the top (at the back) covering the lump on my head. I’m really contemplating leaving it.
