5 men’s hairstyles to rock your long hair!

When it comes to long men’s hair, it’s all about hairstyle inspiration. As a barber with long hair, I can attest to the fact that long hair has plenty of styles to choose from and I even published a guide on long hairstyles for men that has 27 long hairstyles to choose from; that’s how much you can tweak and modify a male’s long mane!

So without further ado, let me give you 5 cool hairstyle ideas for those of you with long hair or wanting to grow your hair long.

Long hair undercut

The undercut haircut has been with us since 2011 when Michael Pitt as Jimmy Darmody popularized the hairstyle in the TV show Boardwalk Empire. However, Jimmy Darmody had medium-length hair, but it didn’t take long for us long-haired dudes to re-invent the undercut into a long undercut hairstyle.

To get a long hair undercut, simply grab a hair clipper and buzz all the hair on the sides and back of your head to a very hair-clipper length. Style the hair on the top with your favorite hair product for long hair although slicked back hairstyles, side part hairstyles as well as manbuns work extremely well for an undercut with long hair.

Ponybun

The ponybun hairstyle is what I call a “half ponytail and half bun”, and thus the “ponybun” name. The ponybun hairstyle is an easy hairstyle to get so long as you have at least 10 inches of hair length all across your scalp, for all the hair is to be tied into a single bun. As the bun is being tied, you just let loose some of the hair which you don’t tie into the bun but instead let the hair hang down (which then forms a ponytail).

The ponybun hairstyle was popularized in 2013 by Jared Leto with his long ombre hair, but it faded in popularity soon thereafter, until websites like ManBunHairstyle.net popularized the hairstyle back again in 2015. Good riddance, I say!

Long side part

Side parting men’s hair has always been a classic thing: from the 1930s classic side swept styles to the grunge side part styles of the 1990s, the side part hairstyle as an official hairstyle has seen it all (so to speak). However, with the increase in numbers of long-haired dudes worldwide, the side part style has been used more and more by dudes with all kinds of hair types (from straight to curly).

The only rule to getting a cool side part hairstyle with long hair is that you have your hair to at least 12 inches in length; any lesser length, and there simply isn’t sufficient volume on the hair to give this style a good look. You want a lion’s mane with a side part, and a lion’s mane you will get once your hair is longer than 12 inches.

Dreadlocks with fade haircut

Dreadlocks for men have always been a misunderstood type of hairstyle. Yes, dreadlocks are clean and hygienic, and yes, any hair type will do to form dreadlocks; it isn’t just a hairstyle for black guys, although it is true that kinky-curly hair (most common in black males) forms dreadlocks faster and easier than straight hair (most common in white males). Ergo, the popularity of dreadlocks among black males, but that’s where the correlation ends.

Dreadlocks are usually done on all the hair across the scalp, but a newer and sharper hairstyle in 2016 that’s showing its head (no pun intended) is the dreadlocks with a fade haircut. Since dreadlocks done on all the hair gives too much bulk (and requires more hair care), dreadlocks on just the hair atop the head with a fade haircut across the sides and back of the head gives a cleaner and less-maintenance style.

I, for one, recommend the dreadlocks hairstyle with a fade haircut for those of you wanting to get dreadlocks but not having enough time to take good care of them. Just make sure that you get a skilled barber to fade your hair on the sides and back of the head as not all barbers can fade men’s hair!

Top knot undercut

As per the undercut haircut for long hair above, two of the most-popular hairstyles for long hair in 2016 are the man bun undercut and the top knot undercut. Essentially, you buzz your hair on the sides and back into an undercut haircut and then grow your hair between six to eight inches of length on the top of your head. This length range gives you enough length to tie your hair into a small bun without the bulkiness of the bigger man buns achieved with all of the hair on the scalp (sides and back included).

The top knot undercut is a very sharp hairstyle, and you can buzz the undercut or straightaway shave it in what’s called an “undershave”. Whichever undercut haircut you choose, please make sure that you place the knot on the crown area of your head )the area on the back of the top of your head) and not on the middle of your head, as the latter looks more like a monk haircut than anything else (i.e. it isn’t a very-aesthetic hairstyle).
