5 long hairstyles to give you inspiration and ideas!

The freedom that long hair gives you as a male to express yourself is unbelievable, and hence the saying that I like to tell those dudes who are considering growing their hair long but are still unsure:

“Once you grow your locks, you ain’t going short!”

It’s absolutely true; growing your hair long is akin to freeing the wild beast inside of you. As a hairdresser with long hair, I will always tell my clients to grow their hair long at least once in their lifetime.

So since this site is all about long hair for men and keeping those long locks epic, I’d like to give you guys these five long hairstyle ideas with this long hair guide that are sure to pique your interest and turn heads on the street!

Shoulder length hairstyle

The shoulder length hairstyle is pretty much the standard hairstyle for long hair guys. The hair needs to be about ten to fourteen inches in length, which will take you about two years to grow if you’re growing your hair from a buzzcut haircut.

The shoulder length hairstyle was specially popular in the nineties with the grunge movement. Shoulder length hair is still popular and has become more and more popular since 2013 when the man bun hairstyle trend exploded (see further down this guide to know more about the man bun).

Chest length hairstyle

Once you grow your hair to shoulder length, you will very likely want to continue growing it long; if anything, just to see how long you can grow your hair to. If you’re a healthy male, you should be able to grow your hair to at least chest length, with some genetically-gifted men being able to grow their hair to their ankles!

The chest length hairstyle for men is great for those of you with straight hair and wavy hair who want to get the full “long hair” experience. Warning: it will take you about four years to grow your hair long to your chest.

Man bun hairstyle

I don’t think that the man bun hairstyle needs any introduction; the manbun has become an iconic hairstyle for men of all ages and cultures. The minimum hair length for a man bun is eight inches. This is about a year and a half worth of growing your hair long from a buzz cut.

The man bun hairstyle is ridiculously simple in that all you need is an elastic hair band to choke your hair into a bun. It’s a stylish hairstyle still in 2015 and I have no doubts that the manbun will continue to be a trendy male hairstyle in 2016 all the way to 2017. So you’re still in time to grow a man bun and look hip!

Top knot hairstyle

The top knot hairstyle is similar to the man bun. However, the difference between the topknot and the manbun is that the topknot has a much smaller bun compared to the manbun as the hair used in a topknot is only the hair from the top of the head.

The minimum hair length for a top knot hairstyle is six inches. That’s six inches for the hair on the top of your head. On the other hand, the hair on the sides and back of your head is to be kept in a very short haircut. The types of suitable haircuts for the topknot include the undercut, the mid contour and the taper cut.

Dreadlocks

The dreadlocks hairstyle is quite black and white in terms of how people see it; you either love it or hate it. However, I’ve found that mot men who hate dreadlocks are those who have only seen the dreadlocks hairstyle on genuinely dirty dudes. When the dreadlocks are taken care of and tied properly, the result is quite dapper and works very well for both white men and black men.

I have no doubts that the above 5 long hair styles have gotten you thinking about growing your mane long or abou changing your long hairstyle (if you’ve got a head of long locks already!). Hi, I absolutely love your blog 🙂 I was wondering if you have the name of model #3 (the man bun guy) or his photographer? He has inspired me to write a character for one of my books, and I’d like to inquire about the photo rights.
